SNOWCUTERIE BOARD
BY AIMEE SHAH
+ examples from Terre’s own handmade board
Building a (aesthetic!) charcuterie board can often produce significant amounts of waste due to the sheer amount of food and packaging involved.
However, this does not always have to be the case. Terre decided to try and make a sustainably sourced charcuterie board and we have decided to share some of our HOT tips so that you can too.
Sneaky tip:
*We used the plastic wrap that our bread and cups were in to protect the board!

Use LOCAL products
-
kindly donated bags of pretzels for us to snack on. Based in Portsmouth, NH, it felt natural that a snack this local and ethically aligned would be important on our board.
-
is based out of Vermont and handled all the hard cheeses for our board. They are dedicated to reducing fossil fuel emissions and increasing renewable energy usage.

USE IN SEASON PRODUCE
Using vegetables and fruits that are in season is also key to act more sustainably as it can reduce the environmental impact because there is less long-distance shipping occurring. It can also make you more appreciative of the natural environment around you rather than solely being focussed on bad consumption practices.
Terre did this by using blood oranges which were in season when we made the board.
where we could have done better
We also used orange, red, and yellow bell peppers as well as carrots. While these are tasty and inexpensive, they were not locally sourced or in season.

WE ♥︎ LOCAL!
Using local brands can be a key way to sustainably source for your charcuterie board. It can help to reduce the transportation associated with your products, therefore reducing the carbon footprint of your produce, it can help to support the local economy and often local businesses are more transparent in their practices.
Mitchell’s fresh salsa and Cedar’s Hummus were key dips used by Terre to try this out. Michell’s all-natural, fresh and gluten free salsa that is made in New Hampshire and Cedar’s Hummus is based out of Haverill, Massachusetts.
